Privacy

Starflight is meant for children to use with a parent or guardian. The parent or guardian signs in with their own Google account, and the child practices while signed in as that account.

Please don’t let a child sign in with their own Google account. If that has happened, delete that account’s data from its Progress page (see “Your choices” below), or email afcano.help@gmail.com.

• From Google sign-in: the account’s email address and the account number Google gives it. The account number becomes a random-looking account ID, which is what our records use. We don’t keep the name or photo on the Google account.
• Learning records: for each question, which word it was, the kind of question, the answer chosen or typed, whether it was right, and how long it took, plus the progress worked out from those answers.
• Usage data: pages opened, buttons clicked, errors, and how fast the site responded, recorded with the account ID and email address of whoever is signed in.
• Cookies: one that keeps you signed in, one that remembers the home page language you picked, a few that label usage data with the signed-in account, and ones that Microsoft Application Insights uses to count visits.

Starflight never asks for real names, birthdays, schools, photos, voice recordings, locations, or messages. There are no ads and no advertising trackers, and no data is sold or shared for advertising.

• To run practice sessions and decide which words come back, and when.
• To show the account’s progress.
• To find and fix problems with the site.
• To let the site’s administrator see the list of accounts (email address and last activity) and turn off an account that is being misused.

• Google runs sign-in, and hosts this site on Google Cloud.
• Microsoft Azure stores accounts and learning records, and the usage data, in data centers in the western United States.
• A text-to-speech service turns the approved course words and sentences into audio. Nothing about who is listening is ever sent to it.

We don’t share the data with anyone else, unless the law requires it.

Accounts and learning records are kept until you ask us to delete them. Usage data is deleted automatically after about 90 days.

• See progress: the Progress page, while signed in.
• Download everything: while signed in, download the account’s learning records as a file.
• Delete: on the Progress page, choose “Delete my data” and type the account’s Google address. That erases the account’s learning records and removes it from the account list right away, then signs you out. Deleted files can stay in storage for up to 7 days before they are gone for good, and usage data already recorded expires within about 90 days. Signing in again later starts a new, empty account.
• Can’t use the button? Email afcano.help@gmail.com from the Google address you sign in with, and we will delete the account within 30 days and reply when it is done.

Every connection to Starflight uses HTTPS. Records are kept in private storage that only the site and its administrator can reach.
